The stigma of mental health.

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

Hard to believe that there is still a stigma when it comes to mental health care. Feelings of failure, guilt and shame often accompany depression, but are more severe when the person also worries that someone else - especially if it is their own family or friends that will think differently of them if they find out they have been to see a Psychiatrist or have been to a Therapist.

Mental health problems are no different then medical problems. If you were diagnosed with high cholesterol or diabetes no-one would shame you for seeing your PCP and seeking medication to improve and prolong your quality of life - right? Mental health problems are no different.

You were born with a genetic predisposition for both medical and mental health problems. So then why is there this idea of personal failure if you seek mental health help? It is not weakness, but a show of strength.
